NYSC Registration Requirements for Married Women

The program aims to foster national unity, patriotism and skills development among the youths, including those married.

NYSC Registration Requirements and Documents for Married Women

Here are the documents married prospective female corps members will need to begin their online registration.

  • National Identification Number.
  • Marriage Certificate.
  • Newspaper Change of Names.
  • Husband’s ID Card (e.g. National ID Card, Voter’s Card, Driver’s License, or International Passport).
  • Husband’s Local Government Identification/Domicile Letter.
  • Utility Bill or Letter of Employment.
  • O’Level Result (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE).

Remember to show married when filling the form on the NYSC registration portal online as this will enable you to scan and upload the supporting documents before submission, since the required documents for the online application won’t be any different from what they will ask for in camp.

Camping for Married and Pregnant Female Corps Members

Married women may join the NYSC camp, but they have the option to apply for a concessional posting.

To enable them to stay close to their families and avoid any marital issues that might arise from being away for a long time, married female corps members can request to be posted to the state where their husband lives, or a state close to it.

To apply for a concessional posting, provide these documents:

  • A marriage certificate or an affidavit of marriage.
  • A letter from husband’s employer stating his place of work and residence.
  • A utility bill or any other proof of residence.
  • A letter of request addressed to the director-general.
  • Call-up letter photocopy.

These documents should be submitted at the NYSC state secretariat, where they are posted within the first week of orientation camp.

The NYSC officials will verify the documents and approve or reject the request.

If approved, the married woman will be redeployed to her preferred state after the orientation camp.

Pregnant women are also allowed to join the NYSC camp, but they have to consider their health and safety first.

The orientation camp is usually a rigorous and stressful experience, with physical activities, drills, lectures, and social events.

Pregnant women might find it difficult to cope with the demands of the camp, especially if they have any complications or health issues.

Therefore, pregnant women have the option to defer their service until after they give birth.

This means that they can postpone their participation in the program until they are ready to serve.

To defer their service, pregnant women should provide these documents:

  • A medical report from a government hospital confirming their pregnancy and expected delivery date.
  • A letter of request addressed to the director-general.
  • A photocopy of their call-up letter.

These documents should be submitted at the NYSC state secretariat where they are posted, before the commencement of orientation camp.

The officials will verify the documents and approve or reject the request.

If approved, the pregnant woman will be exempted from the orientation camp and will resume her service after she delivers and recovers.

What to Do If NYSC Posted Married Woman to Wrong State

For married women, the NYSC offers a provision that allows them to be deployed to the state where their husbands live, acknowledging the importance of family unity.

When registering online, married women are required to show their marital status and provide supporting documents such as marriage certificates, husband’s domicile letter, and other relevant paperwork.

This is to ensure that they are deployed to the state where their husbands live.

However, there can be instances where a married woman is posted to a different state despite her marital status.

The NYSC portal should reflect “Concessional deployment approval: Pending” while these documents are under review.

If your portal shows that your confessional deployment approval is pending, it means that your documents are still being reviewed by the NYSC officials.

Most times, approval is granted in due time before the orientation camp opens.

Regularly check your portal for updates and be patient during this period.

If your deployment approval is not granted and you are posted to a different state, do not panic.

Here are the steps you can follow:

  • Report to the NYSC orientation camp of your desired state on the first day.
  • Once at the camp, approach the officials and explain your situation.
  • Submit your marriage documents again for verification.
  • After the verification of your documents, the camp officials will update your call-up letter to reflect the camp of your preferred state. This process may take some time, so it is crucial to be patient and cooperative with the officials.
  • Follow up with the officials to ensure that your case is being attended to.
  • Visit the NYSC secretariat for further help.

Sample of NYSC Relocation Letter on Marital Grounds

Relocation on marital grounds is one of the four legal grounds for redeployment that NYSC allows.

The other three are health, insecurity, and DG directive.

To qualify for relocation on marital grounds, provide evidence that you are married and that your husband lives in a different state from where you were posted.

The evidence you need to provide includes:

  • Marriage certificate.
  • Newspaper change of name.
  • Letter from your husband stating his state of residence.
  • Utility bill or any other proof of address.
  • ID card of your husband.

You also need to write a formal letter to the Director General requesting for relocation on marital grounds.

The letter should state your name, call-up number, state code, current state of deployment, desired state of relocation, and reason for relocation.

Also attach copies of the documents mentioned above.

Here is a sample of NYSC relocation letter on marital grounds:
