NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program established on 22nd May, 1973, by General Yakubu Gowon, the then Head of State of Nigeria to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and the development of the country.

The primary goal of the program is to promote national unity and integration, provide essential services in various sectors, especially education and health, and fostering youth development and leadership skills.

Participation is mandatory for all Nigerian graduates of universities and polytechnics who are below the age of 30.

Exemptions and exclusions are given to those over the age of 30, those who have served in the armed forces or the police for over nine months, and those with physical disabilities.

The service year comprises four main segments: Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service, and Winding-Up/Passing-Out.

The orientation course lasts for three weeks and involves paramilitary drills, skill acquisition, and other activities designed to prepare the corps members for the service year.

The primary assignment involves posting corps members to places of primary assignment, such as schools, government agencies, and private organizations.

Community development service involves projects and programs carried out by corps members to benefit their host communities.

The winding-up/passing-out involves various activities culminating in a passing-out parade.

Despite its benefits, the scheme has faced criticism and challenges, including issues related to the safety of corps members, the relevance of the program, and logistical problems.

There have been calls for reforming the scheme to better meet the needs of the country and the participants.
